United Airlines Suspends Flights to India, Enters into Codeshare Agreement with Vistara

United Airlines is one of the four major airlines of United States of America. The airline is a legacy carrier which offers different cabin classes of services. United Airlines operates flights to India, from Newark to Delhi and Mumbai. This service has been suspended for now.

As per the airline, this is because of two reasons. One, the developments in Middle East due to the Iran turmoil where there is a war-like scenario developing. Secondly, the closure of Pakistan airspace due to which the airline had to take a detour to reach its destinations in India.

While the airline has suspended its flight services from Newark to Mumbai and Delhi, United has also entered into a codeshare agreement with the Indian carrier, Vistara. Now the airline will be able to add its code to the Vistara flights. Vistara currently operates domestic flights only as it is barred from operating international flights due to a rather infamous 5/20 rule.

As per this rule, a new airline has to operate domestic flights for 5 years before it launches into the international sector and it must have a fleet of 20 airplanes for flying on international sector. However, a codeshare agreement with UA, will enable the airline to have international passengers from US flying to various destinations it covers.

The agreement will allow passengers who have done United Airlines Reservations to fly to 20 different destinations in India where Vistara flies to. In the wake of another private carrier, Jet Airways, having gone defunct, this agreement will allow people from US to reach to 20 Indian cities with ease. This will be a welcome respite.

People are expecting UA to resume its direct flight service at the earliest possible time.

Delta Airlines Declared as Best Airline Despite Harsh Pet Policy

Delta Airlines of US has been declared as the best airline of US by Fodor’s travel. Fodor’s is one of the most reputed awards in the travel industry. This ranking comes after the Skytrax ratings wherein American carriers made a despicable show, not being present in the top 20 ranks in any of the rating categories.

With this award, Delta airlines seems to have captured some space. Fodor has given this rating on the basis of the age of its fleet and the number of flights offered. Another important factor which led Delta to the top slot is that of punctuality. Delta has been “the most” punctual of all, as per the DoT statistics.

Not only has Delta been ranked first on above mentioned parameters, it also the second best when it comes to over-sized person travel and pets category. Their seats are wider than those of most of the other carriers but are not as wide as those of the jetBlue airlines.

With respect to their pets policy, it allows carriage of birds apart from cats and dogs in cabin so long as these can be carried in a kennel which can be kept beneath the seat.

However, the airline had made changes to its pets carriage policy in December 2018. Some of the main provisions of this policy change were:

    a)      Complete ban on carriage of service and support animals that are less than 4 months of age.

  b)      Complete ban on carriage of emotional support animals on flights of more than eight hours

duration.

These restriction come into play for all Delta Airlines air tickets done for travel on or after February 1, 2019.

The policy has invited criticism citing the plight of those people who depend on these animals for travel. Especially, the senior citizens and those who need these animals as a part of their medical care are likely to be affected.

The airline, however, maintains that this policy will actually introduce more safety and healthy practices on the flights.
