Solar Impulse is credited with successful experimentation of the solar-powered planes. Till date, they have developed two prototypes of the solar planes and flown some distance. However, while it is a fact that the solar energy can generate a good amount of energy using these solar panels but it is the efficiency of usage of these cells which is the major problem. 

The efficiency with which these panels use solar energy is very less which severely limits the scope of using it. To cite an example, the efficiency level is just 12% which means that if 50000 watts of solar energy is directed on the panels, only about 6000 watts of energy could be created. This needs to be increased significantly and this is nowhere near the desirable mark.

There are two basic ways to generate more power. First is to have more solar panels. Second is to increase the efficiency of these panels. The latter seems a desirable thing to do but is not possible without significant technological improvements. 

The fossil fuels are rather limited and these are also the major cause of pollution. Alternative sources of energy in the form of solar energy can be effective replacements but only on the condition that suitable technology needs to be developed which can enable in efficient harnessing of the solar energy.

United Airlines Suspends Flights to India, Enters into Codeshare Agreement with Vistara

United Airlines is one of the four major airlines of United States of America. The airline is a legacy carrier which offers different cabin classes of services. United Airlines operates flights to India, from Newark to Delhi and Mumbai. This service has been suspended for now.

As per the airline, this is because of two reasons. One, the developments in Middle East due to the Iran turmoil where there is a war-like scenario developing. Secondly, the closure of Pakistan airspace due to which the airline had to take a detour to reach its destinations in India.

While the airline has suspended its flight services from Newark to Mumbai and Delhi, United has also entered into a codeshare agreement with the Indian carrier, Vistara. Now the airline will be able to add its code to the Vistara flights. Vistara currently operates domestic flights only as it is barred from operating international flights due to a rather infamous 5/20 rule.

As per this rule, a new airline has to operate domestic flights for 5 years before it launches into the international sector and it must have a fleet of 20 airplanes for flying on international sector. However, a codeshare agreement with UA, will enable the airline to have international passengers from US flying to various destinations it covers.

The agreement will allow passengers who have done United Airlines Reservations to fly to 20 different destinations in India where Vistara flies to. In the wake of another private carrier, Jet Airways, having gone defunct, this agreement will allow people from US to reach to 20 Indian cities with ease. This will be a welcome respite.

How Times Changed the AeroMexico Airlines?

AeroMexico is the Mexican flag carrier. The airline is a full-service legacy carrier which operates domestic and international flights to and from Mexico. The color scheme changed yet again and it was painted with Orange and Silver colors.

The decade beginning 1990 was turbulent. The Gulf war raised the price of aviation fuel which hit the profitability of the airline. At the same time, some new start-up airlines were also operational. This increased competition from new airlines which meant that the fares had to be kept in check. This decade also saw start of the devaluation of the Mexican currency which plunged the country into an economic crisis and adversely affected AeroMexico.

The beginning of next decade from 2000 saw AeroMexico being one of the founding members of SkyTeam alliance. Direct flights to Japan and Mexico City via Tijuana were started during this decade. In the beginning of current decade, the airline signed codeshare agreement with Delta Airlines of United States of America.

 Both these airlines later moved to a greater cooperation level by entering into a Joint Venture agreement and, for this, immunity was granted from antitrust litigations by Department of Transport.

AeroMexico has seen many phases during its history. However, the airline has been successful in not only surviving difficult times but also growing with the time. At present, it operates flights to more than 80 destinations globally with fleet size of just 71 airplanes. 

It has a primary hub at Mexico City International airport and two secondary hubs at Guadalajara and Monterrey International airports. Its global footprint is enhanced by codeshare agreements with 15 other airlines from South America, Europe and Far East Asia. This enables it to enter into new markets of the world.

Philippine Airlines Launches Flight to Phnom Penh

This will also be the first direct flight from Phnom Pneh to Manila. All other flights are connecting flights and these have at least one stop at the major hub of that airline in the region. This will put at ease flight tickets booking and travel between two cities.

Impact of Project NextGen On Miami Flights and Its Residents

For those who do not know about the NextGen, let us briefly describe what it is all about. NextGen is a FAA project which seeks to enhance aviation operation in certain air corridors of the country, banking on improved satellite-based navigation systems. It seeks to do away with the ground-radar based navigation and will start using satellite for navigation and guidance. Due to the latter being more precise over flight paths, it is possible to incorporate more flights by reducing the existing conventional flight bands. South and Central Florida is one of the corridors chosen for this project.

In all, this corridor has about 21 airports and the testing would be done on the flight corridors of these airports. One of the cities which is going to experience both the pros and the cons of this project is that of Miami. People throng to Miami all through the year. It is one of those cities which has high air travelling traffic. 

With this project, it would be possible for more direct flights being flown to Miami from different domestic and international destinations and vice versa. Direct flights mean that there will be reduction in consumption of fuel. The reduction in the fuel consumption would result in offering of cheap flight tickets to Miami for the benefit of travelers to this city.

Shrinkage of the flight band means that the new bands would be available for accommodating more flights but this bound to increase the noise levels for the communities that live in those corridor regions. With increased frequency of flights, the neighborhood is most likely to have sleep interruptions in night, and an all-day flight noise which can lead to deterioration of health. 

The consequences of increasing the concentration of flights are, therefore, being brought to the notice of the courts with the ultimate objective of compelling the FAA of seeing the downsides of the project.

Quite clearly, people are not going to fall for the promised cheap air tickets and would rate peaceful living surrounding much higher than reduced fare prices.
