United Airlines Suspends Flights to India, Enters into Codeshare Agreement with Vistara

United Airlines is one of the four major airlines of United States of America. The airline is a legacy carrier which offers different cabin classes of services. United Airlines operates flights to India, from Newark to Delhi and Mumbai. This service has been suspended for now.

As per the airline, this is because of two reasons. One, the developments in Middle East due to the Iran turmoil where there is a war-like scenario developing. Secondly, the closure of Pakistan airspace due to which the airline had to take a detour to reach its destinations in India.

While the airline has suspended its flight services from Newark to Mumbai and Delhi, United has also entered into a codeshare agreement with the Indian carrier, Vistara. Now the airline will be able to add its code to the Vistara flights. Vistara currently operates domestic flights only as it is barred from operating international flights due to a rather infamous 5/20 rule.

As per this rule, a new airline has to operate domestic flights for 5 years before it launches into the international sector and it must have a fleet of 20 airplanes for flying on international sector. However, a codeshare agreement with UA, will enable the airline to have international passengers from US flying to various destinations it covers.

The agreement will allow passengers who have done United Airlines Reservations to fly to 20 different destinations in India where Vistara flies to. In the wake of another private carrier, Jet Airways, having gone defunct, this agreement will allow people from US to reach to 20 Indian cities with ease. This will be a welcome respite.

People are expecting UA to resume its direct flight service at the earliest possible time.

European Dreams of jetBlue Might Materialize in 2021

jetBlue airlines of US is not a low cost carrier. Why we have made it a point to say so that despite being a full service carrier, it is still not flying on European routes even after being established 20 years ago. The reasons are not far to seek. 

It wanted to capitalize on the US market in particular and the Americas routes to begin with. Once this has been achieved to a good extent, and the people have begun to be loyal to its product, it believes that the time is approaching fast that it takes the transatlantic route.

Many of the existing customers of the airline do fly to destinations beyond its routes on regular basis. From Boston, one of its focus cities, the airline already serves 39 of the top 50 destinations. And, out of the remaining top destinations which it does not serve, four are in Europe. 

These four destinations are London, Paris, Reykjavic and Dublin. The airline believes that once it begins operations from Boston to these four European cities, its existing passengers would prefer to do jetblue air ticket reservations rather than on other airlines.

Market analysts point to the fact that European carriers such as Norwegian have added to fare competition in this market which makes the non-peak season fares quite low. Now, the business class travelers do not get the flat-bed seats for their transatlantic journey and this is a gap at the upper end of market which jetBlue can consider to bridge.

 It can draw parallels from its flat-bed Mint premium service which it introduced on transcontinental domestic service with much success.

These analysts also point to the fact that US to London routes in the flat-bed seating class are dominated by alliances such as American Airlines-British Airways and Delta Airlines-Virgin Atlantic. 

The other two competitors are United Airlines and Norwegian airlines. From Boston, there are 8 daily flights- 4 by British Airways and 3 by Delta-Virgin Atlantic alliance and 1 by Norwegian. However, Norwegian does not have a flat-bed seating. This makes the business class cabin tickets quite expensive. jetBlue can fill in this gap very well.

It will need to modify its A321 to enable it to carry more fuel and also to add the premium cabin class seating.

How Times Changed the AeroMexico Airlines?

AeroMexico is the Mexican flag carrier. The airline is a full-service legacy carrier which operates domestic and international flights to and from Mexico. It has played a crucial role in the development of the countries by providing Aeromexico air ticket booking service among Mexican Cities and between Mexican and other international cities.

AeroMexico began its journey in 1934 when it was founded by Antonio Diaz Lombardo on 15th of September. The 1980s was a period marked with rapid expansion initiatives by the airline. A number of airplanes were bought in this period. The color scheme changed yet again and it was painted with Orange and Silver colors.

The decade beginning 1990 was turbulent. The Gulf war raised the price of aviation fuel which hit the profitability of the airline. At the same time, some new start-up airlines were also operational. This increased competition from new airlines which meant that the fares had to be kept in check. This decade also saw start of the devaluation of the Mexican currency which plunged the country into an economic crisis and adversely affected AeroMexico.

The beginning of next decade from 2000 saw AeroMexico being one of the founding members of SkyTeam alliance. Direct flights to Japan and Mexico City via Tijuana were started during this decade. In the beginning of current decade, the airline signed codeshare agreement with Delta Airlines of United States of America.

 Both these airlines later moved to a greater cooperation level by entering into a Joint Venture agreement and, for this, immunity was granted from antitrust litigations by Department of Transport.

AeroMexico has seen many phases during its history. However, the airline has been successful in not only surviving difficult times but also growing with the time. At present, it operates flights to more than 80 destinations globally with fleet size of just 71 airplanes. 

It has a primary hub at Mexico City International airport and two secondary hubs at Guadalajara and Monterrey International airports. Its global footprint is enhanced by codeshare agreements with 15 other airlines from South America, Europe and Far East Asia. This enables it to enter into new markets of the world.

Why Airlines Create Hubs?

Academically, managing the operations of an airline is a very complex task which require the best of operations research (OR). The OR considers hundreds of factors, and incorporates theories such as Queuing Theory at airport counters, which help in ensuring that all operations take place without any hassles.

 This goes a long way in ensuring smooth and punctual flight operations. When it comes to flight operations, there are two basic models which the global airlines have adopted. These are hub-and-spoke model and point-to-point flight models. This also takes into account the fact that hubs shall be able to provide cheap domestic flights to the passengers.

The Hub and Spoke model is generally the most accepted one by the legacy carriers and the Point to Point system works well for the low cost carriers. The Hub and Spoke model is to be discussed here. It shall be noted that there could be many points of origin and destination for an airline.

 Now, in order to operate it will require to provide many services for the passengers as well as for the airplanes, such as fueling, maintenance and repair and others. This requires stationing of certain airplanes in one airport along with all resources which are required to ensure smooth operations for those planes.

While all airports do have certain basic services available for all planes, such as fueling, some others might be concentrated with more resources for a particular plane type. This higher order service airport is the hub. So, the question before the airlines is which city shall be chosen for making a hub.

 A number of factors play a role in deciding this. All of these factors shall lead to the desired objective of getting the maximum passengers from the hubs and, at the same time, maximizing revenue generation.

Spokes, on the other hand, are cities of different populations. These could be origin or destination cities. Even hubs can be origin cities. However, what is important to know is that all flights must touch down on hubs for varying periods of time before reaching the destinations, if origin is not the hub.  Hubs allow airlines to connect passengers to their destinations.

For example, if passengers have to reach Miami and from different cities, say New York, Chicago, Los Angeles or any number of other cities, then it is cost-effective for them to converge at a hub and take the flights from that hub to Miami.

It is worth noting that the connecting destination need not always be a hub. So, an airline might fly from a hub city, touch down in another city and then fly on to final destination. Therefore, airlines create hubs in order to organize their operations in the most optimal way that generate maximum revenues and cause least possible inconvenience to customers.

This will also be the first direct flight from Phnom Pneh to Manila. All other flights are connecting flights and these have at least one stop at the major hub of that airline in the region. This will put at ease flight tickets booking and travel between two cities. 

In this region of South-east Asia, the airline reaches Vietnam, besides Cambodia. In Vietnam, it connect Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.

This is a news which most of the people who fly different US airlines, including Spirit Airlines, would not have expected. The airline which most of the experts in US aviation circles would have written-off a few years back, has recorded the best on-time performance for the month of October of 2018. This astonishing 89% record is something for which Spirit Airline can pat itself on the back. Not only has the airline recorded the best punctuality but has also recorded the least cancellations. Many have already started pointing to the beginning of this turnaround for this airline which has been in news in the past mostly for negative reasons.

Spirit is known to be harsh to passengers in not providing free baggage allowance (many airlines now doing it as well) and not providing any entertainment or refreshments. Another incident which has made it quite infamous is that of the strike of pilots, first for salaries and then for flying the additional routes. With that incident put to past now with hike in salaries of pilots, the focus has shifted to operation efficiencies which can turn the fortunes of the airline around.
